All over the world, the kitchen is a key component in any house or apartment. Some offices also have a kitchen for their staff. Given the level of activity that takes place in the kitchen along with the possible accidents, it is important to understand how you can be safe with regards to electrical installations. For some, the kitchen is a place where cooking of various delicacies take place while others simply warm their food. No matter what you use your kitchen for, it is important to ensure that you are safe.
SparkVolt Electrical Services (SES) is here to help keep you safe. When building your house, ensure that these safety measures are followed. If you are renting an apartment, look out for them as well.
The first safety tip from SES is that all kitchen appliances such as fridge, microwave, deep freezer, air fryer and electric cooker should have an isolator. These appliances at some point may develop a fault which can insulate it. Touching the faulty appliance can give an electric shock. However, if there is an isolator, you can turn it off without touching the appliance. This is extremely relevant when the kitchen appliances are fitted in a cabinet and accessibility to the socket without touching the appliance is nearly impossible.
The second safety tip from SES is that, it is required to have a heat detector in the kitchen. Unlike other rooms which should have a smoke detector, the kitchen should have a heat detector installed by a qualified electrician. Having a smoke detector in the kitchen means that the alarm will sound when there is smoke in the kitchen but smoke in the kitchen is not the biggest concern. That is why a heat detector is what you need. When the level of heat in the kitchen is above normal, the heat detector will sound an alarm.
The final safety tip for your kitchen is that, if there is a boiler in the kitchen, it is a requirement to install a carbon monoxide detector. This is because, if the boiler develops a fault, it emits carbon monoxide which is deadly if inhaled. Once the carbon monoxide detector is installed, the alarm will sound to prompt you. When you hear the alarm, open all windows and doors and stay outside until the alarm stops. Note that carbon monoxide is odourless, so you would not know when you are in danger.
